greenfield site:
. . . raw land or agricultural land identified as having a potential for development, i.e., having not yet been put to its highest and best use from a real estate development prospective.WiseGEEK.com defines greenfield sites as areas of land . . . that has never been developed or built up (source of quote). Wikipedia has a definition of greenfield land which, like wiseGEEK, indicates that greenfield is used in reference to development on the periphery of urban sprawl as it moves into outlying rural areas.
Many locations seeking enterprise and economic development inventory their greenfield sites and promote them to prospects. The word greenfield is in the jargon or those who are engaged in site selection as well as who deal in commercial and industrial real estate. Those jargons also use the expressions greyfield sites and brownfield sites.
